64Wire Shelving for the industrial look
I sell shelving, industrial commercial application stuff and of late have been receiving more and more calls for residential applications looking to get that industrial edge in their space. This is written for you.
Wire shelving. Available in an economy silver epoxy, Chrome, Epoxy coated Black, a new anti microbial coating agent and Stainless Steel. A unit consists of four posts and the number of shelves you require with little plastic sleeves you position on the posts to hold the shelves in place. If you are putting more than one unit together the second unit would consist of two posts and the number of shelves you require and "s" hooks. The shelves tie together with the s hooks eliminating the need for each unit to be stand alone (can stand by itself). If you want an L shaped unit the starter unit would be pushed into the corner and the add on unit attached to it. The nice thing about a corner unit done in this way is that there is not a bar in the way. I have included a pic below.
When it comes to sizes there is just what there is and that's it. Shelves are most commonly available in 18, 21, and 24 inch depths. There are some 14 and 30 inch depths but not much variety. Standard heights for wire shelving units are 63, 74 and 86 inch. You can put as many shelves on a unit as you require but the standards are four or five shelves.
The new things available in wire shelving are triangle shelves, 18 or 24 inches deep that work well in corners as stand alone units. There are also wine racks that will hold 9, 13, 36 or 48 bottles of wine. For security purposes these are also available with side and back panels and doors which can be locked. There are grid panels for hanging utelsils, with hooks and shelf brackets, wire bins, and document holders. Wall mounted wire shelving is available as well. For your office area there are power strips that attach to the posts, keyboard trays, cd racks, surface mount swing arms for flat monitors and even clips tfor wire management.
Unless you are looking at 3 or more units your least expensive option is going to be a residential grade that you can purchase at a local department store. If you are looking for more variety and truly an industrial feel, spend the money for at least chrome, the economy stuff is economy, the finish will chip off in time. Chrome is the second least expensive option. Stainless steel is not available in all sizes and types of units so don't get your heart set on it. The anti microbial units are black in color.
Some manufacturers make adjustable shelving that is quick and easy. Most manufactures state the shelves are adjustable and they are, but you better have a rubber mallet to move shelves that have been holding weight for a while. All of the manufactures have designed grooves at one inch increments on their posts so you can assure level shelves easily. Some manufactures number the grooves to make it a little easier.
Options options options.
If you have an uneven surface you will need to purchase a levening foot for some manufacturers shelves. Some manufactures include these as a standard but not all, and there are decorative options available. There are glides to hold the posts and protect your floors. Hole plugs for add on units and post caps for a truly finished look.
Shelf dividers and ledges are available for most all sizes; the dividers go front to back the ledges are for the outside edges. Enclosure panels are available if you want to keep things from falling off the end or back of a shelf.
Decorative shelf inlays are available in white black or clear depending on the manufacturer. I highly recommend these to provide a smooth uniform surface. Don't forget this is wire and things fall through and do not sit evenly unless they have a smooth bottom that spans over a few wires.
Garmet hangers, waterfall hangers, swing hangers and display hangers there are alot of hangers and snap on hooks available. And let's not forget casters, wire shelving units can be easily made mobile.
Baskets and slide systems are available as well, the tote boxes for the slide systems are 21 or 24 inches wide and ten inches tall, these are designed for the 21 and 24 inch deep shelves. The totes slide in and can be easily taken out, make a drawer system in your shelving unit. Baskets can be attached in a variety of ways and are available big enough to hold a bag of potatoes and narrow enough for file folders.
If you are designing a system make sure you speak with a knowledgeable professional who knows what they are talking about and has your best interest at heart and not their paycheck. We are out there and we welcome your call.
